Globeleq claims this makes the Red Sands project Africa’s largest standalone BESS asset to have reached commercial close, highlighting the growing importance of battery storage in the region’s energy transition.
As South Africa continues to grapple with load shedding, grid constraints, and rising energy demands, battery energy storage has emerged as a game-changing solution. The Red Sands BESS will allow the country to store excess renewable energy—especially from solar and wind—and release it when it’s needed most. This isn’t just about storing power.
These include the Department of Electricity and Energy and the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA). The 5-hectare Red Sands BESS will be located in Northern Cape and is expected to be Africa’s largest. Furthermore, it is Africa’s largest standalone BESS plant to reach financial close.
