As the adoption of renewable energy storage continues to grow rapidly, the demand for efficient and reliable energy storage solutions has also surged. Energy storage batteries (lithium iron phosphate batteries) are at the core of modern battery energy storage systems, enabling the storage and use of electricity anytime, day or night.
As discussed in this review, there are still numerous challenges associated with the integration of large-scale battery energy storage into the electric grid. These challenges range from scientific and technical issues, to policy issues limiting the ability to deploy this emergent technology, and even social challenges.
In this Review, we describe BESTs being developed for grid-scale energy storage, including high-energy, aqueous, redox flow, high-temperature and gas batteries. Battery technologies support various power system services, including providing grid support services and preventing curtailment.
