In the production of solar cells, monocrystalline silicon is sliced from large single crystals and meticulously grown in a highly controlled environment. The cells are usually a few centimeters thick and arranged in a grid to form a panel. Monocrystalline silicon cells can yield higher efficiencies of up to 24.4% .
Monocrystalline silicon cells are the cells we usually refer to as silicon cells. As the name implies, the entire volume of the cell is a single crystal of silicon. Monocrystalline silicon PV cells are produced with the Czochralski method, generated from single silicon crystals. Their manufacturing process is quite expensive since they require a specific processing period. Their energy pay-back time is around 3–4 years (Ghosh, 2020). Their efficiency varies between 16 and 24 %.
Monocrystalline solar cells now account for 98% of solar cell production, according to a 2024 report from the International Energy Agency. This compares starkly with 2015, when just 35% of solar panel shipments were monocrystalline, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
