The “Solar 4 Kosovo II” project is one of the largest energy projects in Kosovo. It will be one of the largest solar plants in Europe and the first in the region in terms of capacity, using clean solar energy for the benefit of heating.
The estimated time for completion is 30 months plus a six-month commissioning phase. After several years of preparation, Kosovo* is moving ahead with the largest solar thermal project for district heating in the Western Balkans. The operator, Termokos, is owned by the Municipality of Prishtina, the capital city.
Kosovo has the potential of capturing solar energy directly and converting it to electricity. The region of highest solar potential based on global horizontal irradiation is the southwestern part of Kosovo, centred around the city of Gjakova. Solar power is already used on the roofs of some buildings.
Given this background, the Government of Kosovo has prioritized the modernization and improvement of the country’s energy sector, and has asked its development partners, including the World Bank, European Commission, KfW, USAID, as well as other donors, for support and assistance.
