The City of Cape Town’s Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, and Energy Mayco Member, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, have turned the sod at the City’s 7MW Atlantis solar photovoltaic (PV) plant.
The City of Cape Town has launched construction of a 7-10 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Atlantis, in the Western Cape Province. To be developed at a cost of approximately $11.3 million, construction is expected to be completed within a year.
The CoCT is the first metro in South Africa to build its own solar PV facility. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg, visited the plant in Kraaifontein on 15 August 2024. The facility is the first utility-scale renewable energy project in Cape Town and the first-of-its-kind in South Africa to be owned and operated by a city.
