Almost 600,000 new stationary battery storage systems were installed across Germany in 2024, increasing the country’s storage capacity by 50 percent year-on-year, according to preliminary data from the German Solar Industry Association (BSW Solar).
If only half of these projects were approved, they would store enough energy to power 30 million German households for one day. Battery storage is needed to supplement the country’s rapid rollout of renewable energy installations, which reached a new record share in electricity production of 55 percent in 2024.
However, renewable energies come with a catch: Due to a lack of storage capacity, Germany cannot fully leverage the potential that solar energy ofers. During sunny and windy phases, wind and solar park operators have to throttle or even shut down their systems repeatedly to avoid overloading the power grids.
Construction began at the end of 2024, and commissioning is planned for early 2026. The launch of these projects marks a major milestone in TotalEnergies’ development of battery energy storage capacity in Germany, where the Company has operations in the production, trading, aggregation and commercialization of clean firm power.
