In a microgrid, energy storage performs multiple functions, such as ensuring power quality, performing frequency and voltage regulation, smoothing the output of renewable energy sources, providing backup power for the system, and playing a crucial role in cost optimization.
A microgrid is a small electricity generation and distribution system containing distributed generation, energy storage systems, loads and monitoring and protection devices. It is an autonomous system that is self-controlled and self-managed. An energy microgrid provides users thermal energy for heating and cooling in addition to electricity.
The analysis of total microgrid costs per megawatt shows that the community microgrid market has the lowest mean, at $2.1 million/MW of DERs installed; followed by the utility and campus markets, which have mean costs of $2.6 million/MW and $3.3 million/MW, respectively. Finally, the commercial market has the highest average cost, at $4 million/MW.
Consequently, several studies and expert opinions point to microgrids as the technically feasible solution to contribute to the energy transition. Microgrids provide an accessible practical pathway in improving energy accessibility, independence, supply reliability and resiliency, flexibility, and cost optimization.
