The base station in a 5G network is designed to provide high data rates, low latency, massive device connectivity, and improved energy efficiency compared to its predecessors.
As defined in 3GPP TS 38.300, the 5G NR network consists of NG RAN (Next Generation Radio Access Network) and 5GC (5G Core Network). As shown, NG-RAN is composed of gNBs (i.e., 5G Base stations) and ng-eNBs (i.e., LTE base stations). The figure above depicts the overall architecture of a 5G NR system and its components.
The 5G baseband unit is responsible for NR baseband protocol processing, including the entire user plane (UP) and control plane (CP) protocol processing functions, and provides the backhaul interface (NG interface) with the core network and the interconnection interface between base stations (Xn interface ).
